So, at this point in my life I have decided that a career change is in order. I want to combine my experience in educating people, my background in theater, and my interest in technology to find a new career path in media. Learning in state of the art facilities with industry leaders like the BBC and ITV will help me accomplish that goal.
Professionally, I worked for a 500-seat theater company in Colorado, helping to produce a year round slate of musicals, dramas, and children’s theater. I enjoyed the creative process of storytelling merged with the technical aspects of producing a performance. This work gave me experience in taking an idea from script to finished production. I transitioned into a 13-year career in corporate training, training large groups, public speaking, and creating/presenting training content. My career gave me many skills that are important to the creative process; such as mentoring, coaching, logistics, planning, and working with diverse groups of people. I have used video in the classroom, as well as helped to plan and create video presentations for online learning. I was recently asked to create a video introduction of myself for a potential employer. I created a script, laid out the shots I wanted, and used iMovie to edit it. I was struck again at how much work went into making a short five-minute video clip, but also how excited I was in creating it. This experience cemented my desire to learn and become involved in the industry.
As a mature student of 44, I have a wealth of real life experience to enhance my school life. I have visited the UK often and been blessed to make some lifelong friends there. One of my long-term life goals is to live overseas and immerse myself in another culture. Studying in the UK is a natural way to fulfill that goal. I hope to see the world through a different lens, as well as bring my experience and viewpoints as an American to the course. In my free time, I am an avid hiker, love the theater and the cinema, and enjoy cooking. I am a keen traveller, which has given me a wider view of the world as well as an appreciation of new cultures and points of view. I hope to explore more of the United Kingdom, Europe, and beyond.
My career gave me the opportunity to hone my public speaking skills with a wide variety of audiences. My personal challenge was to engage my groups with a dynamic and entertaining style. Now I’d like to transfer that experience to create exciting, thought provoking, and entertaining television and radio productions. I have always had a passion for history, science, and biographies. My career plan is to become a director/producer focusing on historical drama, documentaries, and educational programming. I am eager to explore other areas I haven’t considered as I learn more about the course. With the growth of multi-channel television, network television, Web channels, and even demand from the corporate world for content, I see a future where the need for programming is ever growing. This is one of many media projects I have been a part of. I enjoy the planning side of a production and then the implementation of it.Working as a waiter at my father’s restaurant helped me gain useful skills. I found articulating with customers on a daily basis a valuable insight in working with the public. Having the skill to talk to strangers, finding out what they want, discussing their ideas and opinions is very important. This occupation also gave me the skills to be versatile and to use my own initiative. These skills have helped me with other work such as creating a shop for students in my college as part of the Business Society. Other extracurricular societies I am involved in include Manga Society and Film Club. I also took part in The Challenge over the summer. This 3 week course was designed to help me gain personal and team skills and then test them in the real world by creating a campaign and fundraiser.I have the responsibility of Vice President at my college. It is my duty to voice the concerns of the students to the Senior Leadership Team and maintain a positive environment. Every year my college hosts a Model United Nations where sixth forms in the UK come to debate resolutions on relevant issues for 3 days. I was 1 of 9 amongst hundreds to have my resolution approved at general assembly and sent to the United Nations. I also study Business and Music Technology as well as Media. I have found these subjects to greatly aid each other. I think this is good as the knowledge I learn from my other subjects help me with my Media.I try to use my free time constructively to explore my other interests. I have a deep passion for performing. I love music. I am an avid member of the college choir and rock band. This interest ensued after completing my Rockschool qualifications at GCSE. I like to know what sparks an audience to have a certain feel or range of emotions. I have built up a level of knowledge to use in film making and writing as I have an undying loyalty and passion for it which was sparked from the moment I first watched the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ when I was 8 years old. It intrigued me how such strange and diverse characters could come together and create a perfect story. The Writers ability to make this work so perfectly fascinated me thus grabbing my interest. I like to know what truly separates human emotion from the screen and being able to manipulate it in such innovative ways. When selecting my College course my first option evidently was Media, I have experienced critical analysis of the Media, worked independently in creating, writing and producing my own Shorts. I also had to pitch a short film idea to another college which then got selected above all of the other students who participated. I aimed for a short and executable piece knowing full well that’s what they wanted. Over the years I would educate myself in Photoshop, video editing software, scriptwriting and different types of techniques to a professional standard, which I have used in my part-time freelancing in promotional videos and photo-shoots. I have worked on set with professional actors and gained the right experience to work on professional shoots in the future. The course I am currently enrolled on has taught me the fundamental musts in taking the road into such a powerful part of a career. However, taking this trip involves working under extreme pressure and impressive communication skills, which I believe I have gained whilst studying the Media in College. Although it does not cover scriptwriting I would do a lot of that in my own time, I would look forward to learning more about it in university. ‘A boy in a concrete jungle’ is what I always call myself. I was born in Hong Kong and I was educated in Hong Kong. As you know, Hong Kong is an international business centre. Good managers and the well organised structure of companies there impressed me with their ability to compete and grow amidst huge international competition. There are seven million people living in Hong Kong; having systems and solutions that work efficiently is essential. Knowing and understanding spending patterns, hobbies and behavior can increase profits for companies by using management and statistic skills effectively.I have a genuine passion for Music. Since reaching ABRSM Grade 8 violin, I played 1st violin at my school orchestra in Hong Kong and I am currently playing 2nd violin in Nottingham Youth Orchestra.
