DOUBLE DOWN ON … 多加把勁做某事double down on 原先的意思是在玩 blackjack 時，趁著自己手裡的牌好，加倍下賭注，以得到再抽一張牌的機會，後來引伸為更加努力做某事。這個片語算是蠻新的，有的字典還找不到，可是目前很夯。比如，紐約時報前幾天有這樣一個新聞標題：
Engaging in risky behavior, especially when one is already in a dangerous situation. Strengthen one’s commitment to a particular strategy or course of action, typically one that is potentially risky. In blackjack, to double one’s wager after seeing one’s initial hand of cards, with only one more card allowed to be drawn afterward.

標題的意思是，美國總統 Obama 和德國總理 Merkel 藉著啤酒化解之前兩人之間的緊張關係，修復一下關係，也順便借此機會決定加把勁，關於烏克蘭情勢，對俄國施壓。
cut it out 是指「住嘴，住手」的意思，Would you cut it out, already?這句話當中
What have you got to lose? 這句話當中的 lose 是指「失去」的意思，當有人猶豫不決，始終做不了決定，你就可以用這句話 What have you got to lose? 「你有怎麼好損失的？」，來增強對方破釜沈舟的決心。
Upset the apple cart 的字面意思是「推翻運蘋果的手推車」，引伸指「搞亂（某人的）計劃、破壞任務」。至於為什麼偏偏要給蘋果車搗蛋，則難以稽考了，也許蘋果車較常見吧，遇上頑童坐順風車，車子一翻側就麻煩了。Tom really upset the apple cart by telling Mary the truth about Jane. 湯姆把珍妮的真實情況告訴了瑪麗，他可真把事情給搞砸了。
case這個字有「情況」的意思，That will be the case. 就是指「情況就會是這樣了。」但是你若覺得現在的情況只會是暫時，不會長久，你就可以反過來說 That will not always be the case. 每日一句英文複習

I won’t let the cat out of the bag. 我不會洩漏秘密的。The boss didn’t want anyone to know he was quitting, but his secretary let the cat out of the bag. 老闆本來不希望員工知道他要離職，但被他的秘書說出去。We wanted Jill’s party to be a surprise, but Andy let the cat out of the bag. 我們本來想給 Jill一個驚喜派對，但是Andy先跟她說了。『將貓從袋子裡放出來』，就是將秘密洩漏出去的意思。之前在英國賣豬的都把豬仔放在布袋中，但是有些不肖的商人，會把等重的貓放進布袋裡，等到買的人回家打開袋子，才發現裡面是貓不是豬。貓跑出來，買的人才發現自己被騙了！因此，將貓從袋子裡放出來才會有"洩漏了秘密"的隱喻。
get carried away字面上的意思是「被帶走了」，那麼被帶走的是什麼呢？就是心思。當你或是他人說話的時候離了題，偏離主旨扯遠了。你就可以用上這個表達法I’ve / You’ve gotten carried away.
這句話的使用時機是若誰認錯人，或是記錯人的時候，你就可以跟對方說I think you’re thinking of someone else.「我覺得你是想到別人去了」。
