odds是「勝算,成功的可能性」,通常用在賭博或是比賽的場合。你可以說The odds are high. 來表示「勝算高」。相對的,要說勝算「低」只要將high改成low即可. even 在這當作動詞使用,是「使相等」的意思,因而even up the odds則可解釋為「扳回劣勢」

Call it a day. 這個詞組字面上的意思指「就稱它做一天。」進而引申為「到此為止,就這樣結束。」當你要想要結束一件事不再追究,或是開會、上課在結尾前,主席或老師便可說 Let’s call it a day.「今天就到這裏。」

註意看喔!這三個字都非常的簡單,而它所表達的意思更是簡潔有力,就是「除了這裏,哪裏都好」的意思。比如說天氣已經熱得不象話了,而你卻待在一個沒冷氣的地方,此時有人問說要換去何處時,你就可以說:Anywhere but here. 我們還可以稍作變化,比如說有人幫你介紹男?女朋友,對方卻是你的仇人,你就可以說:Anyone but him/her.「除了他/她都行。」或者是你在逛街,嘰哩呱啦的售貨小姐一直向你推銷最貴的產品,此時你只好狠下心對她說:Anything but this.「除了這個,其它都行。」
