在 academia 裡有許多東西是非常的 implicit (隱晦不明) 的，好像大家「自然而然」就學會了，但當自己的學生問到同樣的問題或想將自己的經驗傳授下去時，卻不知道怎麼回答或從何開始。不相信嗎？我舉幾個例子：1) 如何找研究題目 2) 如何寫推薦信 3) 如何選擇學生 4) 如何指導學生。對於東方國家或許還好，有時候老師有計畫，就會「指派」題目給學生，可能不會碰到這樣的問題；但對於在美國這麼開放民主的國家，「個人研究興趣」是非常重要的。如果你不找題目，你的教授是不會幫你找的 (當然也有會找的，不過相對來說算少數)。所以當學生問到「如何找研究題目」這樣的問題時，老師的回答多半是：「多看看文章就知道了。」但相信我，在我讀碩士的時候，根據我自身的經驗與跟周遭同學交流的結果，我們所碰到的問題如下：1) 看文章之後就讓作者說服自己了 2) 這些文章把我要作的題目作完了 3) 看了許多文章，兩面的看法都有，但我自己沒有看法 4) 看了許多文章，但還是找不到題目。雖然此系列前兩篇提出一些原則，但這並不能從根本上解決找研究題目問題。我認為問題的根源不在於找題目，而在於批判思考 (critical thinking)。這可從文章閱讀的層次來看出來。文章閱讀層次在讀文章時，我覺得找研究題目有幾個層次，這層次對應於 Bloom (2001) 的認知領域的六個層次：知識、理解、應用、分析、評鑑、創造。

I think about the diverse ways in which photographs are interpreted. For me photography is a spiritual act, an inner conviction and a desire to abstract essence beyond the material world. I’m interested in something which is built up from within, rather than just a superficial image. In stirring up excitement in me that connects with the innocence of childhood, spent just drawing, designing and creating, simply for the love of it. My first camera, a Polaroid led to hours hunting bugs, flowers and dolls. This progressed to composing subjects through angle and lighting, learning from experience, constantly expressing myself visually. I am continuously inspired by the smallest and simplest of objects, I love playing around with light to create different images and moods. I like how a photograph, unlike the other visual arts, is eternally bound to reality in a more profound way. I am fascinated with the concept of the real, and how people perceive objects and reality. This has been intensified through my A-level subject choices. Photographs are ubiquitous, indeed they are so woven into the fabric of everyday life that many people scarcely give them a second thought. I am aware that it is increasingly difficult to define ‘reality’ in photography, now that we are living in a digital age.–Despite my passion for photography I initially saw it best to pursue a science-based course, seeing photography simply as a hobby. Being the eldest in a family of four I was influenced that way. However after much reflection on what I want out of life, I changed my direction to studying a subject that really matters to me. When I came back into education to study my A-levels I began working with a wide selection of people from different backgrounds, I found this move highly liberating and was able to adjust quickly both socially and educationally. My choices of A-level subjects were selected so that they would give me a broad overview of life, communication and culture. I feel this has broadened my understanding of photography further. Studying Photography at A-level has enabled me to develop an independent and self-motivated practice. I have enjoyed discovering the many genres of photography, specifically landscape, still life and documentary photography. I find the work of photographers old and new highly inspirational. I am interested in the works of photographers ranging Simon Norfolk, Hyung Jeun Park and Sze Tsung Leong. I am drawn to these photographers as my most recent A-level project has involved looking at the effect of man on nature, our imprint, and how the world has adapted to fit our need for technology.–Through my Media Studies A-level I have been able to expand my analytical skills. I enjoyed learning about the sales and marketing side of the media industry in relation to photography. Pursuing Philosophy and Ethics at A-level has made me question my assumptions about how people think and act, it has left me able to think clearly, reason logically and argue with clarity and conviction. I have learnt many new theories and concepts that have further improved my understanding of cultures and history. I hope during a degree course in photography I will be able to bring some of these concepts into my work.

different spoken languages, creating a huge expanse of language barriers, hand signals and
lost translations. However, within this mass of worldwide confusion, pictures and photography
can still be understood universally. Maybe it’s a cliched point to prove, but personally I
think this underlines the concept that a picture can (with no specified language) speak a
thousand words to a thousand different people. I find this idea of global understanding deeply
fascinating and it is one reason among many which has propelled me towards the study and
creation of photography and the visual arts.From a young age I have had an interest in pictures and drawing, which developed, as I got
older into an interest in textiles and a love of fashion. From this I decided to do an
introductory course at The London College of Fashion, and it was there that my idea to pursue
a career in photography and art direction first occurred. I found that although I was
interested in the logistics and business side of the fashion industry it was the compositions,
vibrant images and individuality of the advertising campaigns that truly inspired me. Studying
photography at A-level I have learnt the importance of individual style and personal reading;
seeing this put into practice in magazines and adverts led me to decide that with the aid of
higher education I wanted to go on and work with photography and advertising.I have always had a flair for business, completing GCSE, AS and A level exams with a
high-grade average. I have learnt the importance of finances and budget restraints, which I
think is a very valuable lesson to learn. By studying English Language I have been able to
improve my writing skills and expand my knowledge of the way in which words can be used to
influence and explain. I have found both these subjects to have aided me with various
independent projects and have increased my understanding and ability to perform at a high
level in different areas. When I joined The Henley College I began working and learning with a
wide range of different people from different backgrounds, it was a large change from the
structured life of an all girls grammar school. However, I found moving to this environment
and a new way of education highly liberating, I was able to adjust very quickly, both socially
and to the educational practices. From this experience I learnt to be very open to new
opportunities and places, which has helped me with the projects and jobs I have done.There are a large range of skills required when working in commercial photography- an example
of these being networking and perseverance. In order to gain a wider perspective into the
challenges of this as a career, as well as my subject coursework, I have done freelance work
on a number of occasions including photographing private events and parties. I found these
jobs to be more subjective as I had to work to a very specific brief with tight deadlines; the
results of such experiences I have found to be highly positive. I have learnt to compromise
with difficult clients and have had one of my photographs printed in BCFA member directory as
part of an advertising campaign. However, the biggest learning curve I experienced was when
observing work at a professional studio it was here I witnessed the patience and communication
skills needed to become a successful art director. I think by working with lens-based media at
a degree level I will be further towards gaining the attributes needed for this area of work.
From university I hope to go on to and work within the photography and creative advertising
industry. I know the skills necessary are both creatively and academically challenging, but
due to my ambition, social ability and general love of photography, I think it is definitely
something I could excel at, given the opportunity.

This is patently not true. In fact, at a time when the doctrine of free market fundamentalism has been so catastrophically refuted and the British political elite so thoroughly discredited, it seems that the modern dichotomy between philosophy and the self-serving realpolitik of governance is increasingly untenable. It is this question of the role, or lack thereof, of philosophic enquiry in modern politics that has inspired me to study philosophy and politics. There are pertinent political questions, such as that of over population and climatic degradation, which require philosophical and ethical consideration as well as philosophical questions, such as those pertaining to the right to die and the medicalization of human mortality, that require political action. These questions, I feel, show the true relevance of studying both philosophy and politics.My secondary education was somewhat autodidactic having missed nearly 3 years of school due to illness, which is why I only have 3 GCSE’s, but I view this as being a disadvantage only in regards to having not attained the best possible qualifications. In terms of learning I feel I have gained at least as much from reading in my time out of school as I would have from sitting in lessons, in fact what instigated my interest in philosophy and politics is probably reading Huxley, Kafka and the like many years ago while off school ill. Studying English and Law at A-level have enabled me to write structured essays and to closely analyse texts as well as remember concepts and names pertaining to them which will certainly help in studying philosophy and politics. Further I would gamble my degree course on the notion that these fundamental questions regarding our actions as individuals and as a civilization will remain ongoing, simply because it is our duty as a species to search for our most basic truths.Having been originally ignited and fostered by my college debate club, my interest in philosophy has grown in tandem with an advancing dexterity to structure and express ideas. Aided by skills in logical and systematic thought resulting from my A-Level Business Studies course, this interest has since stretched beyond core texts and to the works of thinkers such as Baruch Spinoza and David Hume. I’ve particularly taken interest to Hume’s ‘A Treatise of Human Nature’, in which our motivations are questioned with the notion that passion rather than reason is the source of our moral actions. Self-examining challenges of this nature appeal strongly to my curiosity, as they carry the question of how or if someone can alter supposedly innate ideas, which in turn raises the question of free will. It’s my hope that degree level study will enhance my academic and personal understanding in areas such of depth and complexity.Other results of my pursuit into matters concerning the human condition have been the works of Machiavelli, Comte and Freud; the latter’s methodology in texts such as ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’ being of particular use in challenging and advancing my deductive reasoning. My A-Level Media Studies course has furthered my interest in the ‘Frankfurt School’, the members of which intrigued me in their attempts to effectively implement both social and philosophical theory whilst recognising the frequent connections between the two. Although I’m not in full agreement with sections of the Neo-Marxist thought to emerge from Frankfurt, Marcuse’s ‘false needs’ theory being one example, I believe that the notion of scholars uniting in the debate and reevaluation of ideas with the aim of social benefit sets an honourable ideology, one which I would be pleased to see my university studies follow.Whilst at college I also took part in enrichment activities such as learning first aid and writing for the college newspaper, as well as holding the position of advertising manager on my college’s young enterprise program. Despite not warming to the title of ‘Ad man’, benefit came from the role’s necessity to assess the needs and habits of our student consumers. Outside academia I donate some of my time to charitable causes such as ‘fun-runs’ and a reading mentor scheme at a local primary school, both of which have the advantage of being able to share in the experience with others.
