PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS
Philosophy is arguably the oldest intellectual discipline, stemming as it does from the basic human need for understanding and it is easy to assume, being as we are constantly bombarded with information and ephemeral distractions, that the search for understanding and meaning in life is either complete or rendered irrelevant by the current culture of attaining meaning through consumption. This is patently not true. In fact, at a time when the doctrine of free market fundamentalism has been so catastrophically refuted and the British political elite so thoroughly discredited, it seems that the modern dichotomy between philosophy and the self-serving realpolitik of governance is increasingly untenable. It is this question of the role, or lack thereof, of philosophic enquiry in modern politics that has inspired me to study philosophy and politics. There are pertinent political questions, such as that of over population and climatic degradation, which require philosophical and ethical consideration as well as philosophical questions, such as those pertaining to the right to die and the medicalization of human mortality, that require political action. These questions, I feel, show the true relevance of studying both philosophy and politics. My secondary education was somewhat autodidactic having missed nearly 3 years of school due to illness, which is why I only have 3 GCSE’s, but I view this as being a disadvantage only in regards to having not attained the best possible qualifications. In terms of learning I feel I have gained at least as much from reading in my time out of school as I would have from sitting in lessons, in fact what instigated my interest in philosophy and politics is probably reading Huxley, Kafka and the like many years ago while off school ill. Studying English and Law at A-level have enabled me to write structured essays and to closely analyse texts as well as remember concepts and names pertaining to them which will certainly help in studying philosophy and politics. Also my current A-level in Sociology has helped me to critically analyse institutions, orthodoxies and power structures which I feel will be beneficial in studying philosophy and politics. Reading is a genuine passion of mine and I derive both pleasure and knowledge from it which is of course essential in the pursuit of any academic Degree and I feel that having read many books pertaining to politics, from Machiavelli’s The Prince to Chomsky’s Hegemony or Survival, and some on philosophy such as Schopenhauer’s On the Suffering of the World and John Gray’s writings on political philosophy, that I have an aptitude for the long term study philosophy and politics.Through studying philosophy and politics I hope to gain a better understanding of the facets of human nature and its place in political discourse as well as the inherent influence the two disciplines have on each other, the philosophical basis of political theory and the socio-political context of philosophical thought.

PHILOSOPHY AND SOCIOLOGY
For me the examination of the human condition and the conditions in which humans exist has sparked the most fascinating cultivation and exchange of critical thought ever recorded. Further I would gamble my degree course on the notion that these fundamental questions regarding our actions as individuals and as a civilization will remain ongoing, simply because it is our duty as a species to search for our most basic truths.Having been originally ignited and fostered by my college debate club, my interest in philosophy has grown in tandem with an advancing dexterity to structure and express ideas. Aided by skills in logical and systematic thought resulting from my A-Level Business Studies course, this interest has since stretched beyond core texts and to the works of thinkers such as Baruch Spinoza and David Hume. I’ve particularly taken interest to Hume’s ‘A Treatise of Human Nature’, in which our motivations are questioned with the notion that passion rather than reason is the source of our moral actions. Self-examining challenges of this nature appeal strongly to my curiosity, as they carry the question of how or if someone can alter supposedly innate ideas, which in turn raises the question of free will. It’s my hope that degree level study will enhance my academic and personal understanding in areas such of depth and complexity.Other results of my pursuit into matters concerning the human condition have been the works of Machiavelli, Comte and Freud; the latter’s methodology in texts such as ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’ being of particular use in challenging and advancing my deductive reasoning. My A-Level Media Studies course has furthered my interest in the ‘Frankfurt School’, the members of which intrigued me in their attempts to effectively implement both social and philosophical theory whilst recognising the frequent connections between the two. Although I’m not in full agreement with sections of the Neo-Marxist thought to emerge from Frankfurt, Marcuse’s ‘false needs’ theory being one example, I believe that the notion of scholars uniting in the debate and reevaluation of ideas with the aim of social benefit sets an honourable ideology, one which I would be pleased to see my university studies follow.Whilst at college I also took part in enrichment activities such as learning first aid and writing for the college newspaper, as well as holding the position of advertising manager on my college’s young enterprise program. Despite not warming to the title of ‘Ad man’, benefit came from the role’s necessity to assess the needs and habits of our student consumers. Outside academia I donate some of my time to charitable causes such as ‘fun-runs’ and a reading mentor scheme at a local primary school, both of which have the advantage of being able to share in the experience with others. I also take an active interest in emerging arts, from frequenting independent cinemas and bookshops to holding subscriptions with locally produced literary magazines, some of which have reproduced my own short fiction. The above is chiefly born out of my adoration of literature, a passion which captivates me and has aided me in many of my studies. This passion however did me a disservice last year when it unfortunately invigorated my more cautious nature, the result being my decision to take a career-focused Journalism degree course instead of pursuing my philosophical and social fascinations into higher education. Despite my experience of university life thus far being one which has undoubtedly advanced me both academically and socially, I realise that I have made an error and am thus determined in seeking to swiftly correct it. In the mean time, I can only take some solace in the fact that Immanuel Kant was once caught in ‘dogmatic slumber’.

GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES
GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES While this phrase sounds like it definitely comes from Scripture, it actually isn’t recorded anywhere in the Bible. The phrase “God helps those who help themselves" is credited to the Greek storyteller Aesop (and Benjamin Franklin). It’s been suggested the phrase is a favorite among pickpockets and shoplifters.ORIGIN: the moral of Hercules and the Waggoner, one of Aesop’s fables.A Waggoner was once driving a heavy load along a very muddy way. At last he came to a part of the road where the wheels sank half-way into the mire, and the more the horses pulled, the deeper sank the wheels. So the Waggoner threw down his whip, and knelt down and prayed to Hercules the Strong.“O Hercules, help me in this my hour of distress," quoth he.But Hercules appeared to him, and said:“Tut, man, don’t sprawl there. Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel."Moral of Aesops Fable: The gods help them that help themselves

YES, I DON’T

DON’T YOU LIKE BOB?YES, I DON’T. 及No, I don’t.
B. 如果答案是肯定的(I like Bob.),那麼回答就是Yes, I do.,而若是否定的(I don’t like Bob. ),答案便為No, I don’t.再看看別的例句吧:e.g., Can’t you drive? No, I can’t. Use the verb BE to ask Yes / No questions about the identity or description of a person, place, or thing.

Becasue I love you (從), I will go with you.

Why do humans act the way they do? It seems a simple question, but you’re as likely to know the answer as you are to learn of the meaning of life. But that doesn’t mean we don’t try. When I applied for college, I took Psychology simply because I was curious, but now, it enthrals me; studying the different theories put forward as to why we do certain things, or why we don’t; delving into the minds of the depressed, the murderous or the deranged and generally trying to explain the things we do unconsciously, like conform. To what lengths can we know about ourselves and what we do? I want to know everything there is to know, to discover the answers, or understand the arguments and counter-arguments; to comprehend how our mind works and what purpose these functions have, or how we remember and recall; why we help or defend; how our mind can cause us illness. All these things are just a sample of what captivates me with Psychology, as well as reading the articles in ‘Psychology Review’, which I subscribed for this year.Along with Psychology, I wish to study Philosophy, which has fascinated me since my first lesson. I’ve always been criticised for looking too deeply into things rather then just accepting them, but Philosophy showed me that I’m not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, to do so. It is a lesson that’s different from the rest in that it teaches you how to think, not what to think. It gives you ideas of why we are here, or what brought us here. It spans several key areas including Theology, Politics and Biology. So, by studying one subject, other subjects are dealt with. It’s unique and severely underestimated. It’s a difficult subject, but one that allows your own personality to have access. This is why I think I’m a good applicant. I know I’m hardworking, and I’m definitely dedicated to this course. Moreover, there were numerous times during school where I was asked to help during certain activities, such as showing people around on open days or making speeches on awards evenings, therefore proving that I am responsible and reliable. Recently, I helped out at the college open evening for both Psychology and Philosophy, explaining to potential learners why I like the course and why they ought to consider taking it. I enjoy practical work and I did an experiment for my Psychology coursework, looking into the matching hypothesis, not long ago. This was fun and entertaining, and also involved great personal discipline and commitment to ensure it worked properly.Although individual work like this is almost second nature, I find teamwork to be a strongpoint, due to my part-time job at a hotel. This involves a great deal of cooperation, otherwise it would be impossible to do the job properly. Every person has a part to play, and if they didn’t do their job, the rest of the circle would fall apart. The same applies in any team. Everyone needs to be involved and work properly for the rest of the team to advance. This became obvious when participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Although extremely fun and rewarding, this required intense teamwork during the walks and the other sections involved dedication and hard work. These attributes can help whilst studying for the course. It is for these reasons that the Joint-Award interests me. With it, I want to take a career in Psychology. I want to help this discipline in some way, or at least to ensure that what we know already is used to benefit others. I want to learn a great deal of knowledge to be able to go into the world and use it to its full potential, either by helping expand our knowledge, use our awareness properly or, even, passing on the theories to new psychologists.

“The first and simplest emotion which we discover in the human mind is curiosity”. I believe that when the mind is allowed to think outside the pre-defined constraints of society, the different directions in which it can travel are infinite.Philosophy for me is the basis on which our lives are based and after reading Aristotle’s Ethics, it is fascinating to find that a lot of the beliefs I hold are so similar to those held by someone who lived over two thousand years ago. My main inspiration for taking Philosophy is Socrates and his unapologetic moral compass. Even when confronted with his own mortality, he refuses to take the easy option that would compromise what he believes in, for me Socrates incorporates everything I feel a good person should be. I am most interested in learning about Ancient Greek philosophy because I feel that in this day and age, the majority of people have lost sight of the basic principles of morals and ethics written by the likes of Plato and Aristotle all those years ago. I also believe like Descartes that I must forget everything I think I know about life and start from the beginning and the next step for me is university.I have particularly enjoyed studying Dr Carol Dweck’s theories of Intelligence. I related to this study because I feel that it summed up my years at school almost perfectly. For most of my childhood up until the end of my teenage years my view on intelligence was, as Dr Dweck theorizes, the “Entity theory of intelligence”. Threatened by failure I have shied away from academic study, because I felt that failure indicated a lack of intelligence and because of this view I never committed myself to my studies. My views on this have radically changed over the last 7 years and I now believe that intelligence is interchangeable, that if curiosity is ignited in the right way, it can be enhanced with the only limitation being yourself.I am currently a student of Psychology and Politics which I am really enjoying. It is exciting to be back in a learning environment and I feel that even though I have done a lot of reading at home, nothing compares to being able to debate a point and question reasoning face to face. I have always been an enthusiastic reader but my thirst for knowledge and understanding didn’t really explode until I was 18. The advancement in available material through the internet has helped me in my quest to learn and understand anything and everything. I have read a huge amount of material on many varying subjects from the philosophy of war and pacifism to the psychology behind serial killers and the study of love.My questions are questions not only about the world around me but questions about myself as a human being, is my moral compass true and just? Or does an era a person lives in determine what they perceive to be right and wrong and why? For me this is a journey of self-discovery, analysing myself, what I am and how I have come to be the way I am is just as important to me as understanding the world around me.I believe that stimulating the body is just as important as stimulating the mind so next year I will be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon on behalf of the World Wide Fund for Nature. I am also fairly well travelled and lived in Australia for 2 years, I also did charity work in Bolivia and have visited Peru, Thailand and Laos amongst others. Leonardo Da Vinci was once asked what the key to his genius was; his reply was simple “Sapere Vedere” which translates as ‘Knowing how to see’. For me understanding the mind and combining this with the basic principles of what it is to be aware, to be human, our interactions and what we think to be right and wrong is so important.

THERE HAS AN APPLE.
“THERE HAS AN APPLE" SHOULD BE “THERE IS AN APPLE".「那裏有顆蘋果。」上面那句話大錯特錯,絕對不能這樣說!如果你想表達實質存在的「有」,你應該要用There + be V.的句型,而不能直翻「有」這個字。Have的意思是「擁有」,主詞通常為生物。e.g., There was still nobody here at noon.
e.g., There have been(現在完成式)quite a few fights in the class in the past few weeks.
