DOUBLE DOWN ON … 多加把勁做某事
double down on 原先的意思是在玩 blackjack 時，趁著自己手裡的牌好，加倍下賭注，以得到再抽一張牌的機會，後來引伸為更加努力做某事。這個片語算是蠻新的，有的字典還找不到，可是目前很夯。比如，紐約時報前幾天有這樣一個新聞標題：
Engaging in risky behavior, especially when one is already in a dangerous situation. Strengthen one’s commitment to a particular strategy or course of action, typically one that is potentially risky.  In blackjack, to double one’s wager after seeing one’s initial hand of cards, with only one more card allowed to be drawn afterward.

What particularly captivated me towards working in the area of psychological background is when my younger brother started speaking to his ‘imaginary friend’. From observation I noticed he would become aggressive, often throw temper tantrums as he was not able to express himself through neither words nor thoughts. His peculiar performance engaged my curiosity in the complicated behavior of young children. As he got older, his behavior and attitude worsened which is why so many questions arose in my mind as to ‘why does he act like this?’ and ‘why doesn’t he act like a normal child?’ It was difficult to communicate with him, as he seemed uncomfortable and would not show any eye contact. Little did my family and I have any idea that he had a disability. It was distressing to acknowledge that he was being bullied because of his abnormal behavior. This resulted in my parents getting him diagnosed by a psychiatrist, it was then we discovered he has Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Psychology encapsulates every aspect of our lives. From childhood, the reasons behind why we do what we do has fascinated me; and when I was disciplined for the type of mischief that one commits at a young age, my reasoning for my actions were always “To see what would happen.” My parents mistook this as an act of mindless disobedience whereas it was in fact my first attempt at social psychology. Then, as I further discovered the leading figures in psychology, my knowledge and love of the intricacies of the human and animal mind grew. Currently the advents in brain scanning technology are providing fascinating insights about the interaction between biology and the environment and equally the area of epigenetics has highlighted the extent to which the upbringing of our ancestors will impact on physiological and psychological developments down the generations. These are areas of knowledge I wish to develop.
