 Since I remember, I have always been interested in politics. I was born in Poland and my country’s political situation had very big influence on lifes of its citizen. That might be one of the reasons why politics was always around me. I think it shaped my character in some ways.
 
In high school I took major part in several contests and debates on European theme. As a member of the School’s EU ClubI organized and took lead in referendum called the Young people vote.
I have chosen Criminology and Politics as my subject because it combines both of my passions. Thanks to my father, since childhood I have been fascinated with politics. He impresses me with thoughtfulness about political differences between countries and changes in the world that we live in. Criminology started intriguing me at school when I was learning about law, criminal behaviors and structures of court. I have never had a chance to penetrate this theme deeper. I was thirsty for information on criminology and I read many books to fulfill my curiosity. I could not decide which of them is suitable for me so both of the subjects together is an excellent combination.
In my teenage years I started to read papers and magazines to follow current Polish and international political affairs. I also had opportunity to watch BBC news with Polish subtitles. That was very helpful to improve my English skills.
I came to England when I was 19 years old to meet a new culture and gain experience. I found the job and started being self-reliant. Three years living beyond my country, made me a strong, industrious, ambitious and mature person. I have the ability to work under pressure, well both on my own or as a part of a team.
I am a dynamic person, I take pleasure in going to gym or jogging. On weekends I like learning French, which is another passion of mine.
I feel that I am sufficiently disciplined, committed and enthusiastic to study the subject area successfully. I am looking forward to the academic and social aspects of university life.

Upon the opening of any quality newspaper, one would find that economic and political news dominate the headlines, but upon deeper reading it can be seen that the foundations of all human thought and actions have been shaped by philosophical theories. The unification of these three subjects is one of the reasons why I want to pursue PPE at degree level. I have always been interested in the modern world, but the decision to apply for this course strengthened with the 2011 UK summer riots, which made me question how a society can reach a point where looting and violence was deemed justifiable by some members of the public.
My curiosity for Philosophy and Politics originated from reading George Orwell’s book ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’. I was aggrieved by the totalitarian ideology of ‘The Party’ and the suppression of the thoughts and freedoms of society. My interest in Philosophy was furthered when I watched Stephanie Flanders’ programme ‘Masters of Money’ about Karl Marx, showing me that economic theory can be backed by philosophical reasoning and that the subjects complement each other. Listening to Michael Sandel’s radio series ‘The Public Philosopher’, I was challenged to think critically about important issues facing society such as discrimination, the class system and income inequality.
My A-Levels of Economics, Mathematics and Psychology are all relevant to this degree. I have been intrigued to learn the theories which explain how an economy functions and I have debated some of the economic worries facing us today, such as market failures and the misallocation of resources leading to poverty and inequality. Economics has taught me how to analytically explain my answers and has given me the ability to construct coherent arguments. Through Mathematics I have learnt logical thinking and the statistical skills I have developed have aided my economic progress. The skills I have acquired in Psychology have enabled me to make critical judgements to gain different perspectives on a question.
In Year 12 I was Finance Director in my school’s Young Enterprise company; the perfect opportunity to put my economic theory into practice. This was my first taste of a real business environment and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of having the responsibility of managing the company’s finances. Currently, I am involved in the national competition Target 2.0, giving me the chance to take the role of the MPC and to assess the economic conditions to reach a decision on the outlook for inflation.
Building on my financial knowledge from Young Enterprise, I undertook work experience, first spending a week at Freestyle Interactive, a digital agency, learning how to use the company’s accounting software and managing customer accounts. I also had a week’s work experience at PSA Peugeot Citroen. As PSA is a global company, there was a stark contrast between the two firms. Although I had knowledge of statements and invoices, PSA used different accounting software so I learnt a new way of inputting data.
In my spare time I enjoy reading and through this I have appreciated books such as ‘An Introduction to Political Philosophy’ and ‘Invitation to Philosophy’. I also love to swim and for 11 years I have been part of my local swimming club. Due to this, for the past two years I have volunteered at my club helping to teach other children to swim. Educating others using the skills and knowledge I have acquired is very rewarding and this has improved my communication skills with younger children. When I am not studying, I work as a lifeguard at my local leisure centre. Through this I have developed a tremendous amount of knowledge and have learnt a vast array of life skills, such as first aid. This is an invaluable aptitude to have as it can be used anywhere and in any situation.
The study of these three interdisciplinary subjects will provide me with knowledge of so many aspects which will open up endless opportunities to grasp with both hands, making this, above all else, the most exciting reason for studying at university.

My ambition is to become a fully qualified Physiotherapist. I am very interested in this career and work experience I have undertaken has confirmed my interest. I recently attended an exploring physiotherapy 3 day course at Nottingham University. This gave me an insight into the different fields available and what studying physiotherapy will be like.

I have always been fascinated about the body and biological science and want to work with people and see physiotherapy as an excellent way of combining this along with the challenge of biological science.
I have completed work experience at a severe special needs school, a sports injury and private physiotherapy practice, an army base, animal hydrotherapy and a rotational placement around the hospital. My work experience made me realise the variety and differences between the different fields. I have seen hydrotherapy pools, tens machines, and ultrasound all used in treatments along with manipulation and massage.
A physio tries to improve the quality of someones life without use of drugs or surgery and help them achieve their personal highest standard of living. I also understand that phyios are not able to help everyone and they are a part of a multi disciplinary team.
Showing my team work skills I have completed bronze D of E and am nearing completion of silver.
My work experience in the special needs school allowed me the opportunity to learn Makaton sign language. This enabled me to communicate with the children along with methods such as picture exchange communication. These communication skills are needed for my work. I am a toddler gym coach and a Trampolining coach for 4-18 year olds. I have to be patient, imaginative and quick thinking for this job. I need to put across an instruction in many different ways so the individual can understand but also make the learning fun. I also help at school with a paired reading scheme.
Inside school I am part of a German exchange scheme, in which I also take an organisational role giving presentations to parents and children about to join the scheme. Crossing communication barriers some people find difficult but I go on international rallies with the camping and caravanning club meeting people from many different languages and still find a way to communicate.
At school I run a wind band. This shows my organisational and leadership skills. I have to be understanding and listen to the needs of individuals, recognise their problems and help them overcome them. Also needed is enthusiasm and to provide the students with motivation. Arranging concerts and the work involved to overcome obstacles I am faced with shows my dedication. I am in a variety of musical groups at school, local and county level but my best musical achievement is obtaining a place in the National Schools Symphony Orchestra. This shows my determination to succeed. It took a lot of self motivation to achieve this place and shows my ability to cope under pressure as I completed the audition process.
I hope I have showed you how much I wish to study physiotherapy and that I have the skills needed to be a successful physiotherapist. If I gain a place on your course I promise that I will do my very best as Physiotherapy is definitely the career I want to pursue.
