I am currently working full time as an administrator in a Hospital in my gap year after sixth form. I chose to take a year out after my A-Levels to gain some true life experience away from the security net of full time education. I was fortunate enough to gain work in the administration field and so continue to improve my knowledge and computer skills. I am also currently undertaking a 20 week OCR accredited CLAIT Level 1 course at open college to gain more computing skills.Obtaining a degree in human resource/personnel management will enable me to seek employment in a large corporation where I eventually wish to specialise in staff development. All my A-level studies interested me, but I felt my sociology A-Level course gave me much information relevant to a human resources/personnel management course such as knowledge of human behaviour and the reasoning behind it. However I do realise the course will entail much work dealing with facts and figures and feel with my GCSE Maths grade B I am well equipped to manage this side of the course too.Throughout my education I contributed in many events such as induction days, sporting event supervision and attending volleyball and badminton clubs over several years. I also attended many school trips in the UK and abroad. In year eleven I was a senior student, running year seven homework and games clubs that contributed to me achieving my Trident Award to Gold Standard.
The work experience I undertook and my current employment challenge me to work with a diverse range of people in an office environment and allowed me to prove I could work effectively in this kind of occupation as the report of my employer confirmed. My part time work as a sales assistant also gave me the confidence to communicate well with people from all walks of life and has improved my social and inter-personal relationship skills with other staff members and public. I feel my proven record of good time keeping, hard work and regular attendance would enable me to benefit from a place at university. In my spare time I enjoy socialising because keeping in touch with my friends is important to me and I also enjoy keeping fit and regularly go to my local leisure centre. In addition I enjoy computing and creating websites that allow me to communicate with people from across the world. My decision to study human resource/personnel management has taken a lot of research and thought over the past three years. After talking to several people employed in this field of work and researching what the course entails and with the rewards it holds, it was obvious that this kind of work was what I wanted to do and so I have applied to take a degree at university to provide me with the qualifications and experience I need to follow my chosen career path.

I would like to apply to do a Management degree. Having acted as Managing Director on a Young Enterprise Team whilst doing my ‘AS’ levels, I came up with innovative ideas that made a very successful company. Having held management positions within Human Resources, Operations, and Finance, I quickly realised that pursuing a management degree at university would be ideal for me.After my GCSE’s, I held a temporary job as a junior in an Insolvency practice, in order to gain work experience. Having to work to tight deadlines taught me how to work independently as part of a professional team. I learnt that in business, if one person lacks productivity, then everyone else can suffer, and also how to motivate others as a means of preventing such issues. I used the skills learnt to enhance my role as the Managing Director of my young Enterprise company, particularly methods of motivation and delegation, and the significance of being accountable for others. Having spent nearly three years working part time in a Health food shop alongside my studies, I developed my communication skills, with both colleagues and customers, and proved to be a trustworthy employee.Being appointed as Deputy Head Boy in the sixth form was a great honour to me. My skills were greatly enhanced by holding this position, as I would often have to listen, and respond to issues brought up by fellow prefects, and students lower down the school. Through activities such as Lunch duty, I learnt the worth of different leadership skills, and that it is important to treat everyone as an individual in order to get results. I was always keen to stay into the evening to help out at school events.Socialising is very important to me, and I am always keen to meet new people. I enjoy trying new foods to increase my knowledge of different cultures, and my culinary skills will prove very useful in independent university life. I enjoy travelling, and learning about modern history. Having recently returned from Prague, I visited a concentration camp. This was a moving experience for me, and something I will never forget. Music is one of my biggest hobbies, and I use music to help me unwind and reflect on things. I use the internet to keep up with current affairs and sports news.I have always been a keen sportsman, representing my school in many sporting activities. I enjoy running, particularly competing in sprint races, but also long distance running as a means of keeping fit. I always try to go for a run every evening, during breaks between my A Level studies. I represented my school as a keen member of the district and Maccabi Great Britain athletics teams, particularly in the relay. I formally played tennis and table tennis in national competitions, and more recently I have played in football, rugby, and cricket leagues outside of school.I believe that my experiences have prepared me for independent university life. My social skills together with my ambition to succeed in life prove me to be good candidate for a Management Degree.

Linguistics

I feel the reason I have such an affinity for linguistics is because I am bilingual. I often find myself compelled by the relationship between English and Lithuanian, the two languages I speak fluently. They are surprisingly similar and yet incredibly different, at times being translatable word for word, and other times, a word or phrase can be impossible to convey in English. This desire for an understanding of languages leads me to different fields within linguistics, the way a language has evolved from its ancestor, how a language such as Sanskrit, spoken thousands of miles away in India can be similar to Lithuanian. This is another of the many reasons why the subject is so interesting, it is an extensive field which is artistic, scientific and philosophical. The way humans and even animals can communicate by forming complicated sounds where stress and tone can change meaning, as in African and South-East Asian tonal languages, is remarkable.
I often encounter the subject of accents as I have acquired a native and localised English accent. This surprises the people I meet, especially when I explain that I moved to the United Kingdom at the age of nine. Linguistics holds the answer to these questions of accent, origin and acquisition and is something I have never had the chance to study but it is something that has always interested me, stemming from my experiences with English and Lithuanian. I have long thought about how a word in Lithuanian, or any other language, may be found due to the existence of the concept and how this shapes the thought of a certain culture or ethnicity. This has brought me to the theories of Sapir and Whorf. Regardless, I believe that a concept can be explained even when it can not be named and therefore exists.
I have furthered my linguistic knowledge and understanding when helping my mother translate texts, such as case summaries, witness statements and letters, from Lithuanian to English and vice versa. What I sometimes come across is the need to use two or three words to describe one concept clearly. Loan words have permeated the Lithuanian language, as any other, nonetheless, a simple example would be the word “idle", which does not have a direct counterpart and if someone was labelled idle, it would translate as “neturintis darbo", translating back as “without (a) job". Through translation, I have gained invaluable knowledge of syntax and relationships between languages of different language families as well as change through extensive language contact.
My interests are wide ranging and I enjoy literature, music, sport, politics and science. I love to read and absorb the extensive knowledge passed down in books through generations. I also strive to keep fit, with basketball and football being my two favourite sports. I play football every Sunday with a group of Lithuanians and enjoy following the trials and tribulations of my national team. The topic of politics is something I have grown to love. Having an understanding of the world around you helps to understand why the world is the way it is and I follow political developments keenly. Language is often a political issue, where linguistic theory applies. The Belgian conflict of Dutch versus French has been raging for years and the nation is teetering on the brink of break-up. The way the two ethnic groups identify each other using language is a particular example of political linguistics and its impact on daily life.
I believe that university is the perfect place to nurture this passion for a subject which intrigues and captivates me. I enjoy working with people and love to analyse the thoughts and ideas of my counterparts, sharing my own knowledge and experiences with them and learning from theirs. Linguistics is a topic that has had a significant impact on my life and I yearn to know much more about it. My experience and devotion to this subject will greatly assist me in any future linguistic endeavours.

English Language & Linguistics

Language is common to all people. By its nature, it is something that links us all together, yet our use of language is a major factor in defining us all as individuals. For something that comes so naturally to all of us, language can hold great power and influence. Even this personal statement is a perfect example of how language can be constructed in order to influence the opinion of others. My decision to study English Language is based on my desire to further my understanding of the language that I and the people around me use and encounter on a daily basis, and through this, understand our society a little better. The study of Linguistics will complement this, giving me the chance to apply precise analysis to language data. As something I have never directly studied before, I see this area as a new way for me to look at language, with a more precise and scientific approach.Within school, I am part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I really enjoy the chance this gives me to write for an audience, and it has greatly improved the confidence I have in my own work. It has been a learning experience in other ways too, as I have gained valuable experience in working both as part of a team and as an individual in order to produce the finished piece. Due to my role in the presentation of the magazine, my ICT skills have also improved. Last year, I volunteered as a library assistant within the school library. Again, this was something I greatly enjoyed, as I was able learn more about how a small library is run, as well as working closely with students of all years.Outside of school, I have a part time job as a sales assistant for a busy branch of Claire’s Accessories. Through this, I have gained more confidence in myself and more independence. This has also given me a working knowledge of money management, albeit on a very small scale, which can be built on to help me during university and in later life. In my spare time, I listen to music to help me relax, and I attend concerts wherever possible. Reading a wide variety of newspapers helps me keep up with current affairs and politics, something important to me, as the everyday lives of all people are directly affected by this. It also gives me an insight into how different news institutions can use language to present a different viewpoint on the same event. I am also interested in film, particularly British cinema and the work of Tarantino.I feel that university is the perfect environment for me to develop as a person. The choices open to me will be increased, and the level of independence that I will enjoy will be much greater. I feel that this, as well as the chance to meet new people and experience new environments, will be something that I will gain something from and enjoy. English Language will give me an excellent platform for a career in journalism, something that I am very interested in pursuing after my studies. However, the knowledge and skills that I gain from my degree will be of great benefit to me in any career path that I choose to follow. I look forward to experiencing university life and the chance to explore language in much greater detail.

Law

“If exams were spoken you would pass with flying colors" this is the very statement that
fuelled my desire to read Law at degree level. My ambition to read Law can be traced back to my childhood as I sat watching lawyers helping people in need. The image of a client smiling at their lawyer’s hard work is imprinted in my mind. The thirst to help people further stems my desire to read Law. To me, law is about helping people in need whether serving justice in a court room or as simple as helping someone buy a home.I have recently engrossed myself in the likes of “Learning the Law" by Williams, and “The Law Machine" by Berlins and Dyer. These have provided me with an insight into the workings of the UK and US legal systems. Further they have raised my awareness of how far ethics and morality are entwined within the legal system. An area of interest is the death penalty which still exists in the US, the ethics and morals surrounding this law are rather controversial and it is this controversy which makes the reading of Law such a great attraction. I believe that my passion and interest in reading law holds me in good stead to be an engaged and successful law student.
My time in education to date has instilled and developed in me the skills necessary to read Law at a higher level. Being a current member of the school debating club further contributed to my confidence in arguing cases with efficiency and potency. Membership in the debating club requires researching information, highlighting the vital and controversial issues, structuring my understanding in a logical way, and delivering an argument in a coherent manner. I am also currently a prefect at the college, so I am instilled in almost every aspect of college life and always being read to give a helping hand at events. These skills mirror the skills needed of a Law student. My choice of subjects at AS and A level have further developed my academic skills. The study of Psychology and Religious Education has enhanced my ability to question and analyse critically the world in which we live. A key skill required of law student as it is vital that a lawyer is able to critically evaluate situations in order to understand the facts of a given case and how this may be interpreted by others. The study of English has developed my literacy skills further, being able to contrast texts, structure arguments and produce high quality essays. A further skill required of a lawyer, as a lawyer must be able to present his points coherently both verbally and through written work. Reading Law has provided a sound insight into the demands of reading Law at a higher level. The course to date has given me knowledge of how the English Legal System operates, the key figures involved in the system and how to analyse laws and apply them to given facts.I possess personal qualities that I believe will encourage me to pursue a successful career in the Legal System. I have a natural drive to help people; this can be seen from my willingness to help younger students with their reading, and peers with law essays and exam preparations. My non-academic interests scope from exercising, star gazing/astronomy and reading classic novels by authors such as Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte.Having the resilience to cope, I believe I will be a successful woman for this emerging generation in the Law. As I feel that my accomplishments will be able to benefit the lives of others if I am given the chance to study Law at university level. Thankyou for taking your time to consider me.

Mature Student Law

I long recall having been amazed as to how law permeates every aspect of our lives. My career thus far has taken me to the City of London, as far away as New Zealand, and then back to Reading again and has served to cultivate my interest in law and made me yearn to study this fascinating subject at undergraduate level, and formally qualify as a solicitor, within criminal advocacy.
My interest in practicing law first became apparent in 2000 when I commenced employment for a mortgage company. The role required liaising with solicitors to ensure that conditions pertaining to our offer of mortgage, and any subsequent legal issues raised, were resolved to the satisfaction of the Company. This is when I began to admire the work of legal professionals immensely. Their ability to advise on matters of law in a such a precise and exact manner was astounding and something to which I aspired as it appealed to my analytical and methodical nature. This, and subsequent roles, developed my argumentative communication skills, both written and verbal, and also enabled me to further develop an analytical approach to problem solving.
Keen to feed my curiosity further, I visited the public gallery within Reading Crown Court. The case was a minor appeal, but left a lasting impression upon me. The appellant was sat directly behind his barrister and was frequently instructing him regarding points raised by The Crown, which were then argued on his behalf. I remember being fascinated by this true demonstration of advocacy in action and decided that a future within criminal law was what I wanted.
I wished to gain first hand knowledge and experience of the criminal justice system so I applied to volunteer for the Witness Service and currently work with them one day a week. This is intensely rewarding for me; being able to observe court procedures and personnel affords me a direct insight into the criminal law world, and is something I do savour; however, this is tempered by the fact that many of the witnesses are themselves alleged victims of crime and deserve my full attention.
The experience I have gained has given me the benefit of seeing the law in a variety of contextual, cultural and practical applications and culminated in my decision to apply for university. As I had not enrolled on an academic course for a while, I thought it prudent to embark upon an Access course.
My choice of subjects has helped me develop a wide range of skills relevant to law at undergraduate level: Business has developed further my critical thinking and analytical skills, and has served to improve my logical approach to problem solving; Psychology has taught me research skills and the ability to critically evaluate an argument, and Law has given me an overview of the English Legal System and improved my written communication skills. Furthermore, all three subjects have enabled me to develop my oral communication skills by way of assessed in-class presentations.
I have a balanced range of outside interests but my main passion is golf, which I have played for over 20 years. I find golf an analytically rich game, with each hole presenting a multitude of problems to be analysed and solved. Many years ago I was appointed the Junior Captain at my local golf club, and thrived upon the pressure and responsibility of that position.
I relish the prospect of studying law at degree level and believe I am ready for the challenges presented by sustained study at this level. The prospect of learning from experts within their respective fields of law is a very exciting one; also meeting new and varied people with common interests, taking an active interest in the student law societies and, in particular, taking part in ‘Mooting’ are some of the things to which I particularly look forward.

Through commonly accepted law, international organizations and sovereign nations establish and enforce vital laws and moral codes of conduct such as those relating to human and civil rights. Yet, despite many ratified agreements relating to principles that are universally accepted throughout the world, human and civil rights remain threatened in industrialized nations as well as third world countries. Therefore, I feel that there is no better or more exciting time to pursue a degree in International Relations and Law.
I grew up in a multicultural, multilingual environment as the son of Ukrainian parents born in the United States and raised in Poland. I learned the English language while living in New Jersey, but spoke Ukrainian at home. Being exposed to two different languages was not an easy task for a young boy, which contributed to some of my early challenges in being able to express myself freely. At the age of seven my family and I moved to Poland. Growing up, I learnt to value my background and appreciate the diverse cultures to which I have been exposed to. While to many people cultural differences may seem frightening, I see those differences as ways to admire the human race for its diversity and progress. My participation in cherishing my cultural heritage has lead to my involvement in many cultural events in numerous cities around Europe; for instance I am an active member of the school choir. We performed for the presidents of Ukraine and Poland, and attended many festivals in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Austria. Over the years I also took part in our school’s folk dancing group. Since 2005 I have been a member of the Ukrainian Scouting organization (PLAST) and have recently been promoted to a senior rank from within which I have organized several summer camps. Thanks to these experiences I have grown as an individual and have greatly improved my ommunication and organizational skills.
Today I am a student in one of the few national minority schools in Poland, where some of the subjects are taught in Ukrainian. I have chosen a broad range of advanced level subjects for my final exams, including History, Social Sciences and English. I have also been appointed the class leader from which I have gained a position of authority within my school community, offering guidance and help to younger students. Being a mentor has helped me learn to face up to new challenges and discover how to apply authority for the greater good of my school
society.
The turning point of my life was the Orange Revolution. Watching the events unfold from a TV screen was incredibly exciting. All over the world Ukrainians and many activists in various countries united to prevent the fall of democracy in a free European country. Basic civil rights such as free speech and free democratic elections were under threat. Being of Ukrainian descent and living in those times was exhilarating as this meant a new wave of changes were occurring not only to Ukraine itself, but to all of Eastern Europe. I look forward to a time when I can somehow contribute to the changes which began during the Orange Revolution. It was at this moment I took a keen interest in the world of international affairs.I strongly believe that my background and determination to be successful in my educational goals will make me an asset to your University. I will strive hard in the pursuit of my degree with the ultimate aim of using my passion and multicultural heritage to deepen my understanding of International Relations and Law.

Policing

I have always been fascinated by the way police deal with stressful and demanding situations and find that when I always see them in the street in their uniform I want to be looked upon as an integral part of a community. For some time now I have considered the prospects of university and what it will be like to learn in such a compelling environment. I think that the policing course will provide me with all the essential knowledge to become an outstanding police officer therefore, I am looking forward to all of the topics covered but most of all the practical work, because I will be able to show what I can do best, although the ‘operational policing’ topic seems very interesting.
As you will notice on my UCAS form I took sociology and there is a reason for this and that is because of the crime and policing topic which I am doing this year, despite all of the other topics that were interesting this is by far the most motivating topic in attracting me to your course. I think that crime and policing is fascinating topic and I will enjoy the course to my full potential. I think it might be good to mention that I have had to rely on the police in the past and found that they dealt with my situation effectively, and prepared me to finally make the decision to become a police officer. There is little I have done that relates to the course because of the age restrictions that I have later mentioned, but that does not make me less enthusiastic about the topic in fact it makes me want to do it more because of the fact I want to learn much more about the subject. To learn a little more I am currently reading a book called “Policing a diverse society" by a man called Phil Clements. At the moment the book Is very appealing and was made for foundation degree students and is a perfect asset to my application.
In year 10 I applied for my work experience with my local police station unfortunately I wasn’t old enough, therefore I went on a placement where I could get a good understanding of helping people and get a real feel of a working environment, similar to that of working with the police. I have been awarded a CSLA (community sports leader award), in which we had to teach and look after year 2′s to year 6′s and part of this was 10 hours of community work with a local primary school teaching kids basketball. From the community work with the CSLA I have gained a greater understanding of helping in a community, a prospect which I am greatly looking forward to in the police force.
When I’m not in school and in my free time I like to enjoy a good game of badminton, or if that’s not available I will either go to the gym or go for a swim to keep fit. I have been fond of badminton since I can remember and have always been keen on the sport. I currently have a part-time job at a hotel where I live in which I prepare food and make deserts and starters. I generally have this job to save money for university and monthly necessities.
I am seriously looking forward to your course and the enjoyment and work of university life. After I complete my foundation degree, with all of the skills, knowledge and work with the Northampton police, I hope to peruse my chosen career path and become a member of the Great British police force.

Economics and Social Policy

In today’s competitive world, qualifications are of utmost importance. While that is indeed a factor that spurs me to take up higher education, the determining factor is my interest in the subjects. Admittedly, the only subject that I have had contact with is economics, but the fields of law and social policy intrigue me as well. Adam Smith once said, “No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable." I feel that this quote aptly shows how social policy and economics can be related and this is an area that I would like to explore. General Paper lessons have allowed me to think critically in many areas as controversial subjects like abortion and euthanasia are discussed in class. With the current financial crisis, studying economics may not be the smartest thing to do in the eyes of many people. Having taken economics in school, it has helped me to understand the basics of how the economy works at both the micro and macro level. However, this is insufficient for me to fully comprehend what is happening in the world currently and this fuels my desire to further my understanding of economics.
The deepest impression that law left upon me was during literature lessons in secondary 2, when our literature text was Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. In a mere 286 pages of text, I was enthralled. I was inspired by how Atticus Finch, uninfluenced by prejudice, fought hard for what he believed was right even when his neighbours chastised him for making a case for a black man. To me, this spirit greatly exemplifies that of a lawyer and inspires me to want to take up such a profession to help uphold fairness in the world. As Aristotle said, “the rule of law is better than the rule of any individual". Although Atticus did not win his case at a time where prejudice was deeply entrenched in the hearts of people, I believe that the law today is fair and that the legal system is what determines whether a society can function well. The movie ‘Erin Brockovich’ also showed me how the law is unbiased and can help people by meting out justice, in this case the law helped small town residents in Hinkley, California get compensation against a big firm for endangering their health. Having taken German as a third language exposed me to the diversity of the culture in Europe. Studying in UK would allow me to explore the rest of Europe, which is something that I have always wanted to do. UK, other than having a top-rate education system which attracts many students from all over, is also ideal due to its English-speaking environment. This would remove any language barriers as I am accustomed to conversing in English, which is the main language of instruction in Singapore. It would also give me an opportunity to live independently and to experience the four seasons something that sunny Singapore does not offer, despite her merits. In my spare time, I am actively involved in community work as I strongly believe in contributing back to the society, clocking over 150 hours over the past 2 years. I am also deeply concerned about societal issues, such as the increasing trend of mental breakdown in youths, leading me to implement a service-learning project which aimed to raise mental wellness in secondary school students. I have also been a part of my school’s Chinese Orchestra for the past 9 years, taking part in many public performances and competitions, most notably attaining Gold (with Honours) award in 2005 and 2007 at the biannual Singapore Youth Festival and achieving a grade 7 in Erhu. Other than my foray in Chinese music, I also hold a grade 8 in piano. I have also held the position of class representative for the past year, showing my ability to undertake responsibilities well. My perseverance has been demonstrated by my quest to improve my skills in my instruments. I am also a good team player and enjoy doing teamwork, yet at the same time able to work well independently.
