For as long as I can remember I have had a very deep passion for Musical Theatre. A passion that was accompanied by a burning ambition to succeed, and even as a small child that ambition was enough to make any sacrifices that were necessary to ensure I would always perform at my best, and since I was about ten years old, small things such as not eating chocolate before a performance, wearing a distasteful, but very warm coat and scarf to prevent catching a cold, and just always taking care of my body and my voice,  and inhaling the steam for fifteen minutes! No sacrifice has or will ever be too much. Because I get my joy out of striving to be the best that I can be, and I get my fun from succeeding in something that was difficult and knowing I had to work hard to do it.

Having come from two extremely musical families, music has always been a prominent part of my life. My love for music developed from recording the radio onto cassettes when I was small, to wanting to know everything about how it all worked. Similarly, during secondary school, my interest in technology began to expand. Suddenly I had found two subjects (music and technology) that I was really passionate about. I went to a local music college to study Music Technology. This included practical and research based lessons in subjects such as Recording, Sequencing and Contextual Studies. I was in a college where the teaching was inspiring. The blend of the practical hands on tutoring, and informative research lessons left me motivated by the amount of input I was getting.

At the age of 5 I recall being intrigued by my mother’s pregnancy. The day my little brother was born I was amazed that he came from my mothers womb. I never forgot that wonderment. 16 years later I was able to experience another pregnancy (from an adults perspective) and was able to see all the different stages, even the birth. This so far has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. This made me aware that the role of a midwife involves more than just delivering babies.

To venture into the realm of science and medicine is to pursue a path of boundless discovery;I am in awe of how much humanity has been shaped by medical advances, paving the way for new cures and better anatomical understanding. Civilisation itself relies solely upon such advances, thus the urge to contribute to an ever-changing profession has long since ignited my interest in a biomedical science course. Alongside the need to apply Biology based science to medical use, the opportunity to further study the complexity of the human body has provided the motivation to steer me towards a well regarded and compelling specialty such as this.

The complex structure of the human body is a unique beauty. However, when witnessing my uncle deteriorating due to cancer it showed that complexity inescapably meant that problems arise. I realized the effects such illness can have on the patient and their families and appreciate how fulfilling being a doctor would be in such circumstances.

My interest in music was well established at the age of 5 when I won a National Composition Competition to compose a song for the Rainbow Guides. I began piano and recorder lessons shortly afterwards and was consequently able to perform with a renaissance ensemble, where I played a variety of renaissance recorders and crumhorns. Since then I have taken lessons on viola, singing and clarinet, also enjoying the challenge of teaching myself to play flute and guitar. Since the beginning of secondary school, when I was introduced to the concepts of musical history and analysis, I have thoroughly enjoyed studying the subject and thirst to further my study of these aspects of music.

I was musical since childhood but honestly, music was not something quite satisfactory for me. Every time I played another piece I was asking myself ‘Is it what I want?’. I felt myself following rules made by others, and when I heard about sound design, it seemed as a freedom to create my own soundscapes. At the age of 7, I enrolled in a musical school, passing the audition with my own synthesiser composition. Lately, my first acquaintance with computer music instantly inspired me to start my experiments in digital music production. Subsequently, it gave me the opportunity to establish an electronic music project that has required a lot of new skills such as composition and sound shaping. With my music project I have released several albums so far.

I believe that my greatest strength is my vivid imagination. From a young age I have been fortunate enough to be able to create new worlds and characters for stories. This course appeals to me because I enjoy writing and using my imagination. I understand that working I the media is a very competitive industry, however I am determined to succeed. I think that this course will help me to succeed and offer me opportunities to further my understanding of the way that language in this media text can influence and inspire people.

I love television, especially British television! I grew up watching the original Doctor Who, Monty Python, Benny Hill, and many others. That love of Britain obtained through her television continues to this day, careening from dramas such as the new Doctor Who and Downton Abbey, to the comedy of Miranda Hart and Graham Norton. However, the attraction for me lies not just in the content, but also in the construction. How are these productions created? What are the logistics involved in producing these complex shows?

“Educate, entertain, inform.” These are the 3 words Lord Reith used to encapsulate the BBC and what Media means to me. My fascination for Media began after studying the subject at secondary school. I can not see a future without me following this ambition. I want to be able to use Media to inspire people, challenge normality, encourage society to evolve and be a catalyst for change. Studying Media at university will help give me the skills and experience I need to pursue my future goals.

I believe that having an ambition is just the seed; by grabbing every chance I get I tend to drown myself in experience and taking risks. It is almost rude for someone so young to stray themselves in the world of media and say that they are going to change the way a story can be told on screen, but it is also rude to deny the fact that someday, someone will. I once heard a quote a long time ago, ‘Find what you love and let it kill you’ as crazy as it sounds, that’s exactly what I want to do. I like to have an ample and thorough understanding of how the world functions of what it wants and what it doesn’t want. In my spare time I watch a lot of documentaries, ant colonies are a particular favourite as they interest me greatly. They have a substantial amount of similarities to how the world functions. The reasoning behind this is that I tend to look at the world from a completely different point of view and use this almost as a psychological weapon into what people perceive to see and feel. I like to know what sparks an audience to have a certain feel or range of emotions. I have built up a level of knowledge to use in film making and writing as I have an undying loyalty and passion for it which was sparked from the moment I first watched the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ when I was 8 years old. It intrigued me how such strange and diverse characters could come together and create a perfect story. The Writers ability to make this work so perfectly fascinated me thus grabbing my interest. I like to know what truly separates human emotion from the screen and being able to manipulate it in such innovative ways. When selecting my College course my first option evidently was Media, I have experienced critical analysis of the Media, worked independently in creating, writing and producing my own Shorts. I also had to pitch a short film idea to another college which then got selected above all of the other students who participated. I aimed for a short and executable piece knowing full well that’s what they wanted. Over the years I would educate myself in Photoshop, video editing software, scriptwriting and different types of techniques to a professional standard, which I have used in my part-time freelancing in promotional videos and photo-shoots. I have worked on set with professional actors and gained the right experience to work on professional shoots in the future. The course I am currently enrolled on has taught me the fundamental musts in taking the road into such a powerful part of a career. However, taking this trip involves working under extreme pressure and impressive communication skills, which I believe I have gained whilst studying the Media in College. Although it does not cover scriptwriting I would do a lot of that in my own time, I would look forward to learning more about it in university. Working alongside industry professionals who have stressed the demands and experience needed to cope in an industry of tough, laborious environment which to my own accord, I do not fear; has been a lesson in itself, and at this point I constantly find myself doing something around the aspect of media albeit photography, reading books on media or a biography of a directors or writers piece and simply losing myself. I would write every day and I look forward to expanding my knowledge in storytelling and writing for the screen as there’s nothing I’d rather do.

Studying mathematics is a pure pleasure for me and I take pride in my achievements in the subject. What makes maths so interesting is its foundations in the real world; for instance, the Fibonacci numbers that arise all through nature, the notes played by a guitar string producing standing waves at different frequencies of sound and algebra which is used to create special effects in animated films and TV shows. My understanding of these topics and the practical applications of maths was enriched by a series of lectures that I attended at the Institute of Education, University of London. Although I can appreciate how maths is an underlying truth all around us and the foundations of our knowledge of the external world, I am particularly captivated by the application of mathematics in the very real world of socioeconomics; for example, linear programming examines the possible optimal solutions to problems concerning resource allocation. As we are all aware, businesses and individuals each have a finite amount of resources which constrains them to work within their means. For this reason, I am particularly eager to study topics like this which explore how mathematicians devised a way to calculate the most efficient use of our resources to achieve the best outcome i.e. maximum profit or minimum cost.

I enjoy learning, developing and exploring new ideas, concepts and ways of working. An interest that I hope may lead to a mentoring or teaching position, where I will be able to share ideas in a researching, developing and learning environment. I strongly believe that any future career path that I eventually follow will rely heavily on a solid foundation, consisting of a sound education to degree level and beyond. Combined with the character building, networking and confidence that I believe university life will provide me with.

There is no doubt that Mathematics is the most important element supporting science and business. Without the equation ‘E=mc2′, Einstein’s ‘Mass-energy equivalence’ can only be a concept, but not a theory.

Catering for the future is one of the most beneficial practises of everyday life, and without foreseeing what liabilities may lay ahead, it is difficult to propose a plan of action in the event of such circumstances. Therefore I find it intriguing that Mathematics can be put to practical use, so that we can develop a logical consideration of financial prospects and aim to eliminate monetary risk by reducing unfavorable outcomes, hence my desire to understand and acquire the skills of an actuary via a degree in actuarial science.

By skimming through a daily broadsheet or examining journals such as ‘The Economist’ it is clear to see that economic issues affect everyone both locally as well as on a global scale. However, I have been interested by Mathematics for many years and have found my enjoyment for it has increased as the depth of my understanding has grown. This has occurred both through my A level studies as well as by reading fascinating books such as ‘Why do buses come in threes?’ Furthermore I feel that this combination will allow me to delve into a multitude of challenging and diverse areas from the manipulation of complex numbers to analyzing the effect of developing technologies on the ‘tiger economies’.

I believe that there are two ways to look at how the world develops: the first is through the progress of history and human civilisation, and the second is through the progress of knowledge and human understanding. The two are intensely interlinked, and I am and always have been passionately interested in both. In addition to maths, cosmology and
