Characters that we grow up with from film and fiction are symbolic of everything we believe a hero should be in the modern day: strong, noble, able to make the righteous choice in the face of adversity and yet still retaining their humanity and emotion. Through my enjoyment of A-Level Classics, I have had access to new kinds of heroes. The Homeric heroes: Hector, Achilles or Odysseus, and Virgil’s hero, Aeneas. One thing I’ve found interesting is how heroes of the Classical age are often presented in supra-human physical perfection, something reflected in Classical sculpture, and are very physically able, whilst modern day heroes are centred around a strong sense of morality. The search for kleos in Homeric heroes leads Achilles and Hector pursuing the task of winning their glory via the slaughtering of their enemies, despite knowing it will ultimately bring them death. In Book 20 of the Iliad, Achilles shows his supra-human fighting abilities when he returns to the fight. We also see his sub-human morality when he glories in the killing of Hector, mutilating and dragging his body around Troy. This is a stark contrast to what we associate heroism with now, where heroes do not have to kill hundreds of enemies to win themselves glory but temper bravery, justice and mercy as unshakeable virtues in the face of adversity. It is not just the contrast in how we view heroism but every aspect of Classics that enthrals me and has done throughout my life. I drew a lot of moral teachings from Roman and Greek mythological stories, at GCSE I studied Latin and achieved an A grade, and in year 12 my enthusiasm was intensified with the studying of A-Level Classics, so much so that I am absolutely certain that this is the course I wish to continue with into the future. My interest in classics is something that extends to studying in my own time. I enjoy reading ahead of the class, and have been exploring the peripheries of the subject by reading the two volume set of ‘The Greek Myths’ by Robert Graves, and Martin Thorpe’s ‘Homer’. I find Thorpe’s observation that a heroes live to exceed other men in any possible field insightful, allowing Odysseus to gain honour through the success of his deceit in Odyssey 13. I have always enjoyed visiting museums and historical sites which have included Elgin’s Marbles, classical sculptures and other artifacts preserved at the British Museum. I have also made trips to Italy to see the colosseum, Mount Vesuvius, the villa at Oplontis, the remains of Pompeii, and Halicarnassus.I am well suited to the challenges of university life. My enthusiasm for a challenge is demonstrated by my recent trip to Tanzania, working in cooperation with the Friends of Urambo and Mwanahala project. I was a part of a group of students who went out to Tanzania and refurbished schools and medical clinics. We were successful in completing our project, despite several setbacks presenting difficulties with our work. The feeling of pride and accomplishment that I had seeing the grateful smiles for our efforts is one I’ll never forget.I feel that a degree in Classical Studies will lend me an important foundation when seeking employment as a Classics teacher. Not only will I have the chance to develop a knowledge of a wider range of Classical texts at university, but I will develop skills that are important in every aspect of employment; critical analysis of texts and source examination. I work well as part of a team as my trip to Tanzania, my work experience in a school and my part time employment in the retail sector show that I can produce results whilst under pressure. I look forward to the challenges that university life and studies will present me with, and it is my hope that that university will be a place where I’ll be able develop my own independence and to flourish intellectually so that I can step into the world with confidence and ability.

Beyond my school interests I played music, and got involved with dancing and drawing. I played the dombyra (a Kazakh national stringed instrument) in the school orchestra and sang in the school choir. Through these activities I became acquainted with and learned the rules and principles of art.In 2003 I entered the physics department at Al Farabi Kazakh National University (majoring in radiophysics and electronics). There I received a good fundamental education in physics, electronics, material science, chemistry, higher mathematics, and the humanities. I gained a deep understanding of these subjects and learnt how to apply this to real life situations. I took part in students’ scientific conferences, at which on three separate occasions I got awards for the best research effort. This activity helped me to improve my skills in report writing and oral presentation.Since 2005 I have been working at the Institute of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of Kazakh National University as a scientific researcher. I have experimentally investigated the structural, dynamical and optical properties of the dusty particles immersed in plasma environment. What makes this work important is its connection with nuclear fusion, microelectronics and nonterrestrial investigations. As the result of my work at the Institute I have made several contributions to international conferences and papers in recognized journals like Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical and Physics of Plasmas. Working at the Institute has enriched my experience in experimental physics and taught me to work in a team.Although I completed undergraduate level study at the best local university, I do not feel that I am in the best position to make any final decisions about my career yet. Thus, I have decided to proceed with study abroad to get a better understanding and knowledge of applied nanoscience. By studying at your university I hope to gain a broad education and professional skills on my chosen course and to learn how to apply these in practice to improve the world around me. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying the flute, piano, and singing, achieving grades five, six, and eight respectively in each of those instruments; I have also learned to play the organ. Having often led the services in my local parish by playing the flute and piano, I feel that I am confident when participating in public performances. I have been a dedicated member in several school bands, orchestras and choirs, performing in concerts and musicals, throughout my school life.I am an enthusiastic cyclist, cycling at least once daily. Also, studying History at AS Level helped me greatly in developing my writing and analytical skills as well as structuring written arguments. This in turn has helped me when writing up practical reports.My work experience in a hospital environment greatly influenced my decision to apply for this course. I was fortunate enough to spend my time in a number of different departments such as Nephrology, Cardiology, Pharmacy and Radiology. During this time I accompanied doctors during the ward rounds, sat in on several outpatient appointments and was able to help the nurses on the wards carry out the basic checks of patients such as blood glucose levels and monitoring body temperature. Working with the clinical pharmacists made me understand the differences between community pharmacists and hospital pharmacists in terms of patient care. I was able to gain experiences in calculating drug dosage and checking patient drug history. However, I was never able to forget business, as studying the course could be my best chance to utilize all that I had learnt throughout my growing and diverse experiences around the world.As I made my way through middle school, and entered ninth grade, I was given the opportunity to come in contact with the subject in Business Studies class. In this course, I found myself fascinated by the many economical aspects of business, the managerial portion of businesses, and my personal favorite, the bases of entrepreneurship. In this section of the course, the class took part in simulation websites that replicate the stock market and was required to create our own in-school business to raise money for charity; the business I created, not only sold the most popsicles, but achieved a net profit of 350 Euros in one month, due to my very low overhead costs that derived from the application of managerial and economical economies of scale.I proceeded with the course until I began the IB programme, which allowed me to further specialize in the subject by taking IB Business at Higher Level.As a result of my very time costly IB schedule, I found myself with very little to no free time, as I consumed every available hour with extracurricular activities; activities such as a BP Oil internship in business; a Global Young Leaders conference; the student council presidency at my high school; a service trip to Ghana, where we built homes for the less fortunate; business chats with various entrepreneurs and CEOs/FEOs such Carlos Brito, the Chief Executive Officer of Anheuser-Busch (InBEV/ AmBEV); undergraduate preparatory courses for university; and of course, feeding the old business news-junky habit. These were all activities of which I am very proud of having accomplished and which I believe allowed my free-time to be used very in a wise and enjoyable way.In spite of the tight schedule that I keep, being well-rounded is important to me, so I persuade myself to relax by competing in National or International tennis tournaments, participating in the school’s varsity teams, and following a fitness programme in order to maintain peak fitness levels. I admire this successful saudi businessman who i consider a role model to me, who made a big fortion from investing in this sector who’s name is Saleh Kamel his success inspired me to aspire reaching his level and in terms of investments this field tends to be low in risk and ever lasting in maintaining wealth. The reason why i am studying business is to pursue a career that helps me to expand my knowledge about the market and how to be able to acquire wealth and gain an experience that will raise my value in the job market. Why am i studying in the UK? I have noticed that studying in the UK gives me a great opportunity to receive my business education in one of the most advanced countries in the world in terms of being a financial world class and business centers.I believe that my ambition to learn new business concepts because that is what i always wanted to study and the main reason why i decided to study marketing and mangement specifically is the dynamism displayed by the world of business and the horizons that are covered by its studies knowing the wealth of information and the myriad ranges of products and services offered. Moreover if we look around we see how our current world is so commercialized which manifest the power of commerce, economics and business. However, the income generated by employees of business can put them in a high standard of living that no other job can generate which makes me proud to major in Marketing and Management.

I ran around my house asking if it was possible to bring back dinosaurs, and spent the rest of my childhood imagining that it was. My parents sparked my curiousity by taking me to places like the petrified forest national park in Arizona or skiing in the rocky mountains. This is where my inherent passion for the sciences came about. An amalgamation of experience and education made me the person I am today.After reading Stephen Hawking’s ‘The Theory of Everything’, I was amazed by how vast our universe is. We only understand a fraction of it. Ever since, I have incorporated my studies with the world around me. I’m interested by the development of new ways to solve modern problems. People rejoice when they learn that coal production is declining. However, sulphur released from coal produces a ‘shield’ in the atmosphere and is actually responsible for keeping temperatures somewhat stable; another factor scientists must consider. My passion for biology has grown immense over the years. It started when a friend and I were inspired to work out after watching Arnold Schwarzenegger films. Being biology students, we immediately started researching methods for the fastest gains. We studied various factors like: the effects of consuming creatine monohydrate and the different types of workouts. Indirectly, we covered part of our A-level syllabus in the ninth grade. Fascination with the practicalities of science had manifested the applications of it in our lives.Every year, my family visits rural villages in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the villages allows me to appreciate the things I’m blessed with. I’ve also learned that crude forms of biotechnology are ubiquitous. In many houses cow dung is piled up in underground chambers. Pipes from the chambers connect to gas cylinders and provide methane to light gas stoves. My goal is to make modern biotechnology prominent in these villages.Succeeding in biotechnology requires knowledge drawn from an eclectic mix of subjects. I’m currently finishing my A-levels with biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and art. Art has helped me appreciate aesthetics and has taught me the importance of dedication. I was one of the few students chosen to attend the UNIS-UN conference in New York. The theme for the conference was ‘The Web: Wiring our World’. For the film competition, we composed a short film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWAAMBeb5Xk) focusing on the defects of the internet, and won first place. After returning, I started the school debate club with a friend. Maintaining the club taught us cooperation and leadership skills. Debating is particularly useful when my friends and I argue about the ethical issues surrounding modern biotechnology. I can express my views lucidly, advocating my passion.One thing that makes me happy is giving. In America, my friends and I ran a service that provided help to students in the neighbourhood, called ‘Homework Helper’. We would help out younger children with their homework, and in the process finish our own work. In my current school, I am part of the Interact club. We take time every month to visit underprivileged children and teach them how to read and write. Other hobbies of mine include drama and on-stage improvisation. Acting in school plays has shown me the significance of body language in our everyday interactions. Living in America and India has taught me the importance of culture in our society. I express culture through my music when I play the guitar. Meeting people around the world has emphasized the importance of perspective. Everyone is unique, yet we all share a common goal of happiness.

Arguably, all engineering disciplines seek to further our quality of life, however, what interests me in bioengineering is that it can directly affect and improve our health and well being. Applications like innovatively designed needle-less injections could reduce the great number of injuries due to syringes, and developments in minimal access surgery using imaging techniques will be incredibly valuable, for example, in reaching otherwise inaccessible disease areas. While undertaking work experience at a General Practice, I quickly realised that I would like to have a positive impact on health care, whilst retaining a focus on engineering.Physics is a subject which absolutely fascinates me; I really enjoy observing theoretical ideas being utilized in real world situations. This passion has led me to be the Physics Student Leader, where I have taken the responsibility of going into physics lessons in the Lower School and helping the younger students. Furthermore, I have spent time with other subject leaders considering the possibility of reducing the environmental impact of our school. I also attended a Particle Physics Master class at Durham University, where I learnt about projects such as CERN. Mathematics also greatly interests me; so much so that I have been independently reading about topics like the calculation of pi by mathematicians including Gregory, Leibniz, and Machin which I first read about in Enigma by Robert Harris. I also enjoy working through the complex problems I encounter in mechanics and applying the techniques I have learnt.Whilst Physics and Mathematics are my preferred subjects, I also enjoy all aspects of science, whether it is from the biological or the physical sciences. For example, in biology I found the structure of the heart and the way it works particularly interesting. Thus the multi-disciplinary bio-engineering course appeals to me as it will incorporate many different areas of science. I read both Student BMJ and the New Scientist; recent articles of interest include one on apparent imperfections in human evolution.In July 2006 I spent three weeks doing volunteer work in Costa Rica organised through my local Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. We worked for a short period with an indigenous tribe and also worked at a turtle conservation project, where we built a raised walkway from local bamboo. My experience there opened my eyes to third world culture and environment, and improved my communication skills and my ability at working as part of a team. I can also work independently which is shown in my success in studying an A-level in Religious Studies a year early, in my own time. I am currently studying Further Maths AS-level in my own time because I enjoy the challenge it presents me, and because I believe it will help develop my mathematical aptitude, which is an important ability for any engineer.One of my main leisure interests is playing the guitar, which I find thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable. I play many styles, including classical, jazz and I am involved in a rock band called ‘Required By Fashion,’ with whom I helped organise two charity gigs. In my church I play in the worship band. Through church I have been on Christian Adventure Holidays in the Lake District where I took part in mountaineering, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing and ghyll bashing, which were all great fun! The Christian faith has also helped me to develop a strong sense of morals and a compassionate attitude to other people.I like to think that I have the maturity and commitment to succeed at University, and believe I will enjoy and rise to the challenges I encounter. I feel I will also add to the university community and have the potential to achieve.
